Reading Richard Branson’s book recently,  Business Stripped Bare, I noted that he is, and always has been, a strong advocate of PR. One of his memorable passages says…..

Publicity is absolutely critical. You have to get your brand out and about. You have to be willing to use yourself as well as your advertising budget, to get your brand on the map. A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a full page ad, and a damn sight cheaper. I have an absolute rule, if CNN rings me up and wants to do an interview with me, Ill drop everything to do it. Turning down the chance to tell the world about your brand seems crazy to me, and it astonishes me that the very people who sign off on multi-million dollar advertising budgets – the CEO’s and presidents of huge corporations – are the very same people who hide behind their PA’s and turn away journalists at the door.
